Medical emergencies may occur during the provision of dental hygiene and dental services and their cuase and nature vary. Emer-gencies may arise due to local anesthesia injections, adverse drug interactions and dental anxiety, as well as other possibilities. In addition, patients with preexisting medical conditions may be prone to acute exacerbations ,which could result in life-threatening medical emergencies. This course will utilize a systems based approach to identify and treat the most common in-office medical emergencies.

Course Objectives:

  • Recognize the symptoms of several medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office.
  • Explain the emergency procedure to be followed for the most common in-office medical emergencies.
  • Identify essential emergency equipment for the emergency cart.

Presented by: Clark D. Andelin, DMD, MD
Dr. Clark Andelin was raised in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Utah for his under-graduate degree. He excelled in the pre- medical curriculum and was placed on the Dean’s List for academic achieve-ment. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine where he excelled in head and neck anatomy and dissection courses. He graduated in the top tier of his class, training in the medically complex student clinic and earning awards from the Academy of Osseointegration.

He received his Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree in 2010 graduating at the top of his class. Following dental school, Dr. Andelin entered residency at the prestigious Hospital of The University of Pennsylvania/Childrens Hospital of Philadelph-ia. As part of his residency, he completed an accelerated medical school curriculum and received his Medical Degree in 2014 from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Andelin is well trained in bone grafting, the placement of dental implants, removal of impacted teeth, orthognathic surgery, oral and maxillofacial pathology, temporomandibular joint disorders, cosmetic procedures, and facial trauma. He is certified in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).

Dr. Andelin resides in Stowe, Vermont with his wife, Jennifer, four children and his dog. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family and taking in all of the outdoor and cultural activities that Vermont has to offer.
